October – ALA Ecourses – Technology Competencies for Paraprofessionals (6 weeks):
If you work in a library, it’s essential to have a working knowledge of the basic technologies used in both the library field in general and in your library specifically. In this course, library technologist Robin Hastings will provide a solid foundation in library software, hardware, and troubleshooting that is appropriate for any library worker who needs to expand their tech skillset.
No previous technology experience or specific tech training is required. Students will read a variety of articles, view videos, and engage in assignments and online discussion boards to aid in their learning. Over six weeks, you will learn the fundamentals of technology concepts like the ILS/Catalog and reference databases as well as how to use common software packages. You’ll also learn the basics of hardware troubleshooting and strategies for working effectively with technology staff when needed. Each week will cover a different aspect of library technology.
After completing this eCourse, participants will be able to:
- Effectively use their ILS/Catalog to find resources for patrons
- Troubleshoot basic computer and hardware issues
- Use reference tools and resources to help multiple user groups in the library
- Help patrons increase digital literacy skills
- Locate and identify library policies around tech as well as follow policies regarding security and library confidentiality/privacy
- Use computers and common software applications to help patrons and create informational resources for them
November – Library Juice Academy – Personal Knowledge Management with Linked Data:
Participants in this course will be introduced to the concepts of personal knowledge management, Linked Data, Mind Maps, and how they can all be combined for use in libraries. This course will offer many opportunities to try new software and explore new concepts with nothing more than a web browser and some curiosity required. Expect discussions and lots of examples about how to use these concepts and software packages in your library.

Knowledge Management (KM) is the work done by an organization to collect, create, and organize the knowledge used by its employees. Engaging in KM and Personal Knowledge Management (PKM) can improve the efficiency of both your organization and your day-to-day work.
In this four-week eCourse, library tech expert Robin Hastings will introduce you to KM and PKM, which extends KM to the personal realm. You’ll learn practical applications for these concepts and how they can help you improve your work in areas like staff training, library marketing, using patron data to drive decisions, library instruction, and much more.
This course will give you an introduction to concepts and specific technologies that will help you share and organize information and help your library work smarter, not harder. Hastings will cover several apps and software, both open source and proprietary, that can help you get started at both the personal and organizational level.

A six week online course about library technology, designed to meet the requirements of the Library Support Staff Certification. This course covers general trends, roles and responsibilities, confidentiality, data integrity, appropriate use, patron training and assistance, discovery tools, troubleshooting, and assistive technologies.
